ISO 14064
Solutions for Companies and the globe come through international standards
ISO 14064 series of international standards was developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The standards gives guidance and covers organizational and project level requirements for the quantification, monitoring, reporting and verification of GHG emissions.
It consists of three parts:
ISO 14064-1 Specification with guidance at the organization level for
quantification and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions and removals
ISO 14064-2: Specification with guidance at the project level for quantification, monitoring and reporting of greenhouse gas emission reductions or removal enhancements.I
ISO 14064-3 is a specification with guidance for the verification and validation of greenhouse gas statements. Ιt establishes the requirements of the process followed by the verification bodies to verify / validate GHG emission reports.
Specifically, for the calculation of the carbon footprint of products, the ISO 14067 Standard applies as a Specification with guidance for quantification of the carbon footprint of products (and services).
Introduction to Carbon Footprint, ISO 14064-1, ISO 14064-2, ISO 14067 and EU ETS
Strategic benefits of organizations and companies utilizing ISO 14064 and ISO 14067 for their carbon footprint calculation and reduction for their operation and products, allow to organizations and companies, to:
- Demonstrate a clear commitment to internal and external stakeholders towards climate action and goals of carbon reduction
- Meeting the requirements of regulators and stakeholders for the reporting of emissions data
- Enhance credibility and trustworthiness of publicly reported organizational emissions data, providing reliable information to the communication strategy of the organization or company
- Identification of opportunities in data collection processes improvement
- Provision of assurance and trust over the accuracy of the GHG inventories
- Steering the organizational strategy in the short, medium and long term, towards carbon net – zero
- Tackling the organizational climate impact at an early stage, reducing any future taxes on carbon
- Positioning of the organizations and companies ahead of competition, as climate change mitigation will be addressed in sufficient time
- Legal and other compliance (e.g. compliance with Climate Law, customer requirements, etc.)
- “Operational Efficiency”, as the process of monitoring and reporting emissions often identifies areas where energy consumption and waste can be reduced, leading to cost savings.
- “Market Advantage”: the organizations and companies that demonstrate environmental responsibility may enhance their brand reputation, attract environmentally conscious customers, and potentially increase their market share.
- “Access to New Markets”, as compliance with international standards can open up opportunities in global markets, particularly where such standards are a prerequisite for doing business.
How do the standards ISO 14064-1, ISO 14064-2, and ISO 14067 align with UN SDGs:
ISO 14064-1, ISO 14064-2, and ISO 14067 standards contribute to the achievement of United Nations specific Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), related for example to climate action (SDG 13) and responsible consumption and production (SDG 12). Each of these standards plays a critical role in environmental management and sustainability, directly supporting the efforts to achieve specific SDGs.
TÜV HELLAS accreditation and verification procedure of annual emission reports according to ISO 14064 - Part 1:2018, ISO 14064 - Part 2:2019
ISO 14067:2018 - Experience of TÜV HELLAS
TÜV HELLAS has a long experience and experienced personnel in the GHG emission verifications and as a Certification / Verification Bodyis which is accredited in Greece by the Greek Accreditation Body ESYD S.A. (Certificate number 884-5), carrying out verifications in ETS for GHG emissions trading system since 2005 and afterwards verifications according to the other international standards.
The verification procedure of direct and indirect emissions followed by TÜV HELLAS includes:
a) the initial Verification
b) the periodic annual Verification
Training
Training is an introduction for anyone is involved in the development, implementation and management of GHG emissions based on ISO 14064 and ISO 14067 GHG, such as for internal auditing and for the GHG emissions Coordinator. During this training may be received the knowledge and understanding of ISO 14064 and ISO 14067 upon which one may build auditing skills.
